Question 1 of 4

What do you need painted?

Painting laminate cabinets: the honest guide

Many Fairfax condos and townhouses have laminate cabinets. So do 90s kitchens built on a budget. The question is always the same. Can they be painted?

Yes, if: the surface is solid, flat, and well-adhered. No peeling. No bubbling. No swelling at the edges. Then degrease, scuff, bonding primer, and enamel work fine.

No, if: the coating is peeling. Or the surface is lifting. Or water has swollen the board under it. Paint over damage just locks the damage in.

The adhesion test

On the free visit, we test. A piece of tape, pressed and pulled, tells us what the primer will face. If the surface fails the tape test, we tell you paint is not the answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can laminate cabinets be painted?

Sound laminate, yes — with bonding primer and the right prep. Peeling or bubbling laminate, no. The surface has to be solid.

What is thermofoil, and can it be painted?

Thermofoil is a vinyl wrap over MDF. Intact thermofoil can sometimes be painted. Peeling thermofoil cannot — the wrap has to come off first.

How do you prep laminate for paint?

Degrease, scuff-sand, bonding primer. Laminate is slick. The primer is the whole bond. We test adhesion on the visit.

How long does paint last on laminate?

Less than on wood, honestly. Good prep gets you years. But laminate is the one surface where we set expectations carefully.
