Question 1 of 4

What do you need painted?

Best paint for kitchen cabinets: the short list

Cabinet enamel (water-based urethane). The pro standard. Sprays smooth, cures hard, washes well, holds color. This is what we spray.

Waterborne alkyd. Flows like oil, cleans like water. Good leveling, hard finish. A solid second choice.

2K polyurethane. Two-part commercial finish. Extremely hard. Usually a shop finish, not a field finish.

What to avoid

Flat or eggshell wall paint. Too soft. Marks if you look at it.

Chalk paint without a hard topcoat. Pretty, fragile.

Oil-based paint. Yellows, smells, and cleans up with solvents. Its day has passed for kitchens.

Primer matters as much

Bonding primer grips the old finish. Stain-blocking primer stops bleed-through. The topcoat gets the glory. The primer does the holding. See the prep guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best paint for kitchen cabinets?

A cabinet-grade enamel — hard, washable, and self-leveling. Water-based urethane enamels are the current pro standard.

Can I use regular wall paint on cabinets?

You can, but it will not last. Wall paint is soft. It scuffs, sticks, and washes off. Cabinets need a harder film.

What about chalk paint on cabinets?

Chalk paint looks charming and wears fast. It needs wax or topcoat to survive a kitchen, and even then it is softer than enamel.

Oil or water-based for cabinets?

Modern water-based enamels. They cure hard, stay white without yellowing, clean up easy, and smell less. Oil yellows and is restricted in many areas.
